About Steven Devlin: In his dual position as MU Extension Business Development Program (BDP) Director and Assistant Dean for Entrepreneurship in the MU College of Engineering, Steve Devlin leads a $10.4 million program that is a partnership among many of Missouri’s publicly funded colleges and universities, the Missouri Department of Economic Development, the U.S. Small Business Administration, the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Environmental Protection Agency and many private sector organizations.
Through those partnerships, Steve leads a statewide team that helps small to mid-sized companies improve productivity, enhance profitability and manage growth. The BDP includes the Missouri Small Business & Technology Development Centers (MO SBTDC); the Missouri Procurement Technical Assistance Centers (MO PTAC); the Economic Development Administration University Center (UCIE); the Environmental Assistance Center (EAC); and the Workforce Development Program.
Before joining the BDP in early 2013, Steve served in three positions at the Iowa State University Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS), first as industrial design specialist for the Product Development Team from 1999-2002, then as industrial project manager for the Biobased Product Group from 2002-2012 and finally as program director of the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP). Prior to joining Iowa State, Steve worked as an engineering analyst and product designer for Drafting Works, Inc., contracted to John Deere Des Moines Works; as a design drafter for Hollister Incorporated; and for a residential construction company. Steve served as a graduate and adjunct instructor in the Department of Industrial Education and Technology at Iowa State. He is a U.S. Army veteran and former member of both the Missouri and Iowa Army National Guard.
Steve holds a bachelor of science in industrial science from Truman State University, Kirksville, Mo., and a masters of science in industrial technology from Iowa State University. He is nearing completion of his PhD from Iowa State in industrial education and technology. While at Iowa State, Steve served as a member of the Iowa Alternative Materials and Energy Working Group, the CIRAS Strategic Planning Team, Extension BioEconomy Taskforce and the Excellence in Extension Board of Directors. He served as president of the industry division of the National Association of Industrial Technology. He is a member of Epsilon Pi Tau and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and received the University Economic Development Association project of the year award in 2004 for the development of the Federal Biobased Products Preferred Procurement Program.
Steve’s research interests include bio-polymers and bio-composites, the biobased products industry and rapid prototyping. As the son of an Extension professional, Steve has a deep appreciation for the roles played by the land-grant university, Extension and higher education in regional economic development.
A native of Kirksville, Mo., Steve is pleased to be back in his home state, residing in Columbia with his wife and two children.
